What`s happening in the garden today ?

Well, exciting times for St Albans Garden Design this summer. Our very own little patch of Paradise was selected for filming by BBC Gardener`s World and the piece will be going out at 8:30pm on BBC 2 on Friday 9th AugustĀ  as one in the series focusing on creative “small spaces” – just what we work on with our business. You can see Frances in the background photograph filming with the cameraman and research assistant. The segment may be some 6 to 7 minutes long but filming took all day, from 9:00 to well past 6:00pm and all on one of the hottest days of the year to date.
Well worthwhile `though as it gave Frances the opportunity to talk about her background in horticulture and garden design with the emphasis – of course – on the plants ! Just check out those magnificent yellow Tree Lilies (variety Conca D`Or) bought at Chelsea 2018 which have topped out at somewhere around 2 metres. Adding height to a small space really expands the footprint of your garden, gives interest and makes a `big garden` impact. This year, we have concentrated on making sure that we have as many pollinator friendly plants in the garden as possible. The plant list provides a long season effect, luscious scents, particularly in the evenings, and a rich colour palette. Apart from the Tree lilies, we have Day lilies, Nicotiana, Phlox, Dianthus, Verbena, Nemesia, Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum Jasminoides) and many more. Oh yes, of course, not forgetting the sweet peas ! A fabulous riot of colour and absolutely swamped with honey bees, a wide range of solitary bees, lacewings and butterflies in their dozens. Our work focuses unrepentantly on plants and plants designs. Of course, everyone will have their own ideas on what they want from their outside space and that is as it should be but for us, the joy of the garden is in it`s plant content.
